NEW YEARS EVE IN REYKJAVIC

New Year's Eve in Iceland has gained quite a reputation over the past years. Countless articles have declared Iceland — and its charming capital, Reykjavík, in particular — one of the top destinations to ring in the new year and we tend to agree. But with all those articles mentioning the epic party scene and the magnificent spectacle that is the midnight fireworks display, the real essence of what makes the occasion truly unforgettable gets lost.

HOW ICELANDERS CELEBRATE THE NEW YEARS

Traditionally New Year in Iceland has been all about the family, people gathered together to celebrate, eat and just be cozy together. Telling local and family stories are very popular. An early dinner, out to a New Year bonfire for 08:30, then back home to watch Áramótaskaup between 22:30 and 22:30. This satirical end of year show is put on by RÚV, the state broadcaster, the whole nation watches as the year´s news stories and events are ridiculed. See the show from last year:

WHERE TO ENJOY THE FIREWORKS ON NEW YEARS EVE

The sky will be lit up almost everywhere you'll go and wherever you look. If you are staying in a hotel/apartment outside of the down town area we would recommend you to enjoy the show from any tall building or at any hill with a good overview of the city. If however, you want to be in the centre of the show – And participate in not only your private NYE party celebration but celebrate with everyone in the city, then we have been celebrating at the square right in front of Hallgrímskirkja church for the last years. There you will find thousands of people, happy, lighting up the sky – And ready to party their ass off!

Hallgrímskirkja

Hallgrímskirkja church is one of Reykjavík's most visited buildings and rightly so – it's beautiful! It's also a place where hundreds of city dwellers gather to shoot up fireworks and ring in the new year. I personally love watching the fireworks at Hallgrímskirkja, even if you don't get a view of the whole city. You're also very close to all the bars if you want to kick off the new year with a bang. If you want to spend your new years eve at Hallgrímskirkja Church. Local hotel Here

Áramótaskaupið

By 10pm Icelanders are heading home (though they definitely won't stay in for the night!) to watch Áramótaskaupið, the New Year's Comedy. It's a special show that has been broadcast annually since 1966; it focuses on the past year from a satirical standpoint. Over 90% of the population tunes in and it is the talk of Iceland the next day.

BONFIRES IN REYKJAVIK

10 bonfires (4 big and 6 smaller ones) are lit around Reykjavik at 8:30pm. The tradition of the bonfires dates back to the Middle Ages when fisherman would clean the house to ready it for the new year. They would burn all the old things in a massive bonfire. The tradition has carried on, but now-a-days Icelanders just gather around the bonfires to sing and symbolically burn the old. At 8:15 I swapped my heels for my moon boots and bundled up. It was quite the sight to see all of us ladies pulling on thermal leggings under our cocktail dresses and traipsing out to a fire burning in a field. We joined right in with the massive crowd, lighting sparklers and dancing around the fire as fireworks exploded around us.
